Chapter 8

THE FIRST THING ALDRIC remembered was the pain.

It burrowed deep into his body and set his spirit aflame with agony. Aldric had felt nothing this excruciating in his life. He wondered if this was what dying felt like. Stories of people peacefully passing on into the afterlife seemed almost comical now. He prayed whatever deity was about to seize his soul would hurry the hell up.

But strangely, the pain didn’t end, only lessened. It actually lessened to such a degree that Aldric could start forming coherent thoughts again. He still felt like he was being slow roasted while naked over a bonfire, but he could finally start asking important questions. Such as, “What the hell happened?”

He tried to look down at himself, but then realized he couldn’t see anything. That brought on a whole new round of panic as he tried to order his eyes to open without avail. He couldn’t feel his body, either. If he still had arms and legs, they weren’t listening to his requests to move. Eventually, he noticed a pressure on his back that dug painfully into his spine. He tried wiggling away from it, but he only drove it deeper under his sluggish movements.

Then there was a light. It was faint at first, like a faint sunrise just cresting over the horizon, but it steadily grew until it was all Aldric could see. Aldric tried to squint against the oppressive light, but then remembered that his eyes weren’t responding. Enduring yet more agony, Aldric waited for something else to happen. It wasn’t like he could do much right now.

Aldric’s eyes abruptly snapped into focus to take in a field of stars. He hadn’t opened them exactly. They’d just started working again without preamble, like someone had suddenly remembered to flip a switch in his brain. He immediately slammed them shut, having felt like he was opening them for the first time as they throbbed with pain. He moved his arm up to shield his face, which was how he learned he now had control of his limbs again. A dull thrumming in the back of his mind slowly morphed into sounds he could partially recognize; marching feet, the rattle of metal, and screams. Aldric felt like his ears were gradually unclogging as the noises steadily grew loud enough to give him a splitting headache. Realizing that the sounds were coming from all around him, Aldric cautiously opened his eyes again to figure out what was happening.

The same stars dominated Aldric’s immediate view, but there were now people walking past him. Aldric realized he was lying on his back, staring at the sky while others walked past his prone form. They were seemingly uninterested in him or his plight. Aldric tried calling out to them for help, but quickly realized that he hadn’t been breathing this entire time. He took in a gasping breath of air, the pain he’d been feeling immediately receding a great deal as his body finally took in the essential oxygen it had been craving.
